New York Yankees vs Tampa Rays Spring Training Preview 3-17-11

And so the great experiment begins.  Brett Gardner leads off for the Yankees tonight with Derek Jeter behind him in his classic Yankeeography inducing number two slot.  Joe Girardi stated yesterday that he may very well use this lineup every day for the rest of the spring so we will get an excellent look at how these two table setters will do.

I applaud Joe for spending the next two weeks with this approach to the team, and based on the Hit and Run he put on in the top of the first last night with Jeter and Swisher I think we are looking at a manager who could possibly be breaking out of his Earl Weaver mode and getting ready to put runners, not just on base, but in scoring position for the amazing RBI men in the heart of the order.

The lineup you see below is exactly the lineup that I expect to become the most feared group of players in close to a decade.  Just put Russell Martin at ninth instead of Montero and this could be how they win the World Series this year.

No pressure Brett.

Gardner LF
Jeter SS
Teixeira 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Cano 2B
Swisher RF
Posada DH
Granderson CF
Montero C

Hughes RHP

Let's also not forget that Phil Hughes is trying to prove that he can be the number two starter and that facing a lineup like the Rays tonight is a great moment to solidify that slot.
